Sarah Chandler

Our Andover ancestor Sarah Chandler was the younger sister of John Chandler I, 1655-1721, who was the grandfather of the Priscilla Chandler, 1713-1778 who married Sarah's grandson Samuel Phelps III, 1712-1795, her second cousin. This John had two sons, both of whom are are direct ancestors of ours, so that two of his great-grandchildren (Samuel Phelps III's son Joshua Phelps I, 1738-1798 and Lois Ballard, 1746-1836) were also married as second cousins. Not only that, but John himself, in spite of prevailing Puritan admonitions, married Hannah Abbott, 1650-1741, his own first cousin! New England apparently had a very restricted gene pool.

Sarah, her siblings, and her husband were part of the heroic, civic-minded Glorious Generation. Her parents were part of the reactive, nomadic Cavalier Generation. Her eight elder children were part of the adaptive Enlightenment Generation. Her younger two children were part of the idealistic Awakening Generation.
