Hannah Abbott

Our Andover ancestor Hannah Abbott (variously spelled Abbot) married back into her mother's family, the Chandlers, quite a close-knit family. She married her own first cousin, John Chandler I, 1655-1721, the son of her mother Hannah Chandler Abbott's older brother Thomas Chandler, 1628-1703. First-cousin husband John's younger sister Sarah Chandler, 1661-1757 became the grandmother of the Samuel Phelps III, 1712-1795 who married Hannah and John's granddaughter Priscilla Chandler, 1713-1778, Samuel's second cousin. Hannah and John had two sons, both of whom are are direct ancestors of ours, so that two of her great-grandchildren (Priscilla Chandler Phelps's son Joshua Phelps I, 1738-1798 and Lois Ballard, 1746-1836) were also married as second cousins. New England apparently had a very restricted gene pool.

Hannah, her siblings, all but her oldest stepsiblings, and her husband were part of the heroic, civic-minded Glorious Generation. Her father and her stepfather were part of the idealistic, puritanical Righteous Generation. Her mother and her eldest stepsiblings were part of the reactive, nomadic Cavalier Generation. Her children were part of the adaptive Enlightenment Generation.

Sources on Hannah Abbott Chandler:

  • Robert Kline's Ancestors, Merged with Those of Several Distant Cousins.
  • For more information on Francis Dane I, Hannah's stepfather, see Bargeron's Genealogy Records. This site, however, has Francis's brother John Dane (1612-1684) as the second husband to Hannah's grandmother Annis Bayford. But then how could Grandmother Annis have married her third husband, John Parmenter, in 1660 unless her second husband had already died? It also seems unlikely (though not impossible) that Annis would marry the older brother (older by 2 years) of the man who married her daughter Hannah Chandler Abbott (the mother of Hannah Abbott Chandler). We must then agree with the Kline research that Annis's second husband was this John Dane's father, John Dane (1590-1658), who was also the father of Francis Dane I.
