John Richie

[ The Mackintosh tartan ] [ The Mackintosh tartan and badge ]

Our Richie (also spelled Ritchie) ancestors were dependents of (and considered part of) the Mackintosh Clan (whose Gaelic name was Mac an Toisich, meaning "son of the chief"). (Click either of the illustrations for an enlargement.)

The Mackintosh Clan occupied the region just to the south of Inverness and into the Strathdearn (Monadhliath Mountains), along the River Findhorn in the Highland County of Inverness (in the old county of Nairn).

The warlike Mackintosh were part of the Covenanters north of the Spey and fought Cromwell's Roundhead forces in 1650. The clan supported the royalists in the 1689 Glorious Revolution, but it was part of the 1715 and 1745 Highlander uprisings.

John Richie, according to his granddaughter Catherine ("Kate") Findley, had been forced into military service and finally imprisoned for 10 years in France. Perhaps this means he was impressed into the British military in the fight against Napoleon and then captured by the French?
