Susan Fry

Susan Fry and her husband were part of the idealistic Transcendental Generation. Her children were part of the nomadic, reactive Gilded Generation.

An alternate spelling of Fry appears to be "Frye" or "Frey." There is a very strong likelihood that our ancestor Susan was descended from our Frye ancestors, also from Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, and who had been established there in the 1600s.

Susan and her husband, John Hinchcliff, a British immigrant, had at least three children, including our ancestor Hannah Elizabeth Hinchcliff. They bestowed the middle name of Jackson on the youngest of these children (who unfortunately died quite young), born during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, which suggests that the Hinchcliff family favored the Democrats, in that year at least.

Late in life, Sarah and John lived with their daughter Hannah and son-in-law Ephraim Mansfield and their many children in Saugus.

Birth of Susan Fry
Born: 1800
Birthplace: Probably(1) ("Pat") for much of the information about our common ancestor Susan. She shared with me her findings from the "Hinchcliff Family Genealogical Forum," sponsored by Genealogy.com. Apparently there is a family tradition, cited by Richard Heiser (of the Sun City Genealogical Society), another descendant of Susan (through her son Henry Hinchcliff), and Dorothy Hinchcliff, still another descendant of Susan (also through Henry)--which has Susan born in England, as her husband, John Hinchcliff, was. At the time of her marriage, however, Susan was a Fry from Andover, so it is more likely she was part of the well-established Frye family, who had been in Andover since the 1600s. Pat cites the 1870 census, which documents her birthplace as Massachusetts.

Sources on Susan Fry Hinchcliff:

  • ("Pat"), b. 1951, great-granddaughter of Arthur Seymour Edmands, 1862-1951, for considerable information, including from the Saugus Town Hall records, from census data, and from gravestones in the Riverside Cemetery in Saugus.
  • Pat Mathews also cites Richard Heiser and Dorothy Hinchcliff, two descendants of Susan's son, Henry Kitteredge Hinchcliff, for several facts. From Richard Heiser, the year of Susan's marriage and the children of Henry Kitteredge Hinchcliff. From Dorothy Hinchcliff, Susan's age at the time of her death and a number of other details. From both Richard and Dorothy, Susan's surname of Fry.
