Mission Statement
[A proclamation of who I am (or at least aspire to be) and what I am about, a personal standard determined after reading The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey (London: Simon and Schuster, 1989) and The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino (New York: Bantam, 1968)]

I am not on this Earth by chance; I was conceived in love and brought forth with a purpose. I will not attempt to imitate others; rather I will accent my differences, hide my similarities.

This day is all I have, and these hours are now my eternity. I will live this day as if it is my last.

I will extend the miracle that produced me to my deeds of today. I will greet each day's new sun with confidence that it will be the best day of my life. The duties of today I will fulfill today. I will love and embrace Ina, my wife, with sweet kisses. I will give my heart to my children and appreciate the wisdom they already have from their generation. I will lift up a friend in need, and give myself today in sacrifice and work.

I will concentrate my energy on the challenge of the moment. I will make each hour count; each minute will I trade only for something of value. I will act now, because now is all I have.

I will always let my reach exceed my grasp, always raise my goals as soon as they are attained. I will do the work that a failure will not do. I will persist until I succeed. I will try and try and try again.

I will toil, and I will endure. I will never consider defeat. I will ignore the obstacles at my feet, and keep my eyes on the goals above my head. I know that small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking. I know that each failure will increase my chance for success at the next attempt.

In my persistence, though, I will keep a healthy attitude: I will cherish my body with cleanliness and moderation, uplift my mind with the wisdom of the ages, feed my soul with meditation and prayer, and share my heart, looking on all people and things with love.

I will love the ambitious (who inspire me), the failures (who teach me), the young (for their faith), and the old (for their wisdom). I will laud my enemies and encourage my friends. I will dig for reasons to applaud, not scratch for excuses to gossip.

I will love the sun, which warms my bones, the rain, which cleanses my spirit, the light, which shows me the way, and the darkness, which shows me the stars.

I know that all my problems, discouragements, and heartaches are great opportunities in disguise. Each misfortune I encounter carries within it the seed of tomorrow's good luck.

I will not permit the petty happenings of today to disturb me. I will control the weather of my moods by forcing my actions to program my thoughts.

I will smile to improve my digestion, chuckle to lighten my burdens, and laugh to lengthen my life. I will laugh at the world and at myself, knowing that all things shall pass. I will bring joy, enthusiasm, brightness, and laughter to others. Each day is triumphant only when my smiles bring forth the smiles of others.

I will persist long enough to win, but when I win, I will not allow myself to become so important, so wise, so dignified, so powerful that I forget how to laugh at myself and my world.
